600 Health Caregivers Have Died Of COVID-19 In USA

The Lost on the Frontline, a project launched by the Guardian and Kaiser Health News (KHN) in a bid to count, verify and memorialize healthcare workers who die during the pandemic in the United States of America has indicated that nearly 600 health caregivers have succumbed to the virus in that country so far.

The list includes doctors, nurses and paramedics, as well as crucial healthcare support staff such as hospital janitors, administrators and nursing home workers.

The Guardian reports that the majority of those documented were identified as people of colour, mostly African American and Asian/Pacific Islander.

Lost on the Frontline also reports on the challenges healthcare workers are facing during the pandemic. It notes that many were forced to reuse masks countless times amid widespread equipment shortages while others had only trash bags for protection.

The project also notes that some deaths have been met with employers’ silence or denials that they were infected at work.
