Soldiers, Police Called In To Quell Riots At Quarantine Centres

Returnees housed at Masvingo Polytechnic and Masvingo Teachers Colleges quarantine centres reportedly clashed with members of the country’s security services on Friday as they demanded to be given their COVID-19 tests results and be released from compulsory quarantine.

The clashes were ignited by a huge influx of returnees at the centres from South Africa and Botswana, with those who came earlier fearful that they were being exposed to the coronavirus.

The inmates, who claimed that they have been at the quarantine centres for the past 17 days and were tested for the deadly Covid-19 on Monday, expected their results within 72 hours but health authorities failed to avail them.

Soldiers and police officers had to be deployed at the two centres after a nurse was held hostage at Masvingo Teachers’ College while inmates barricaded the canteen at Masvingo Polytechnic College.

33 people from Masvingo Teachers College and over 80 from Masvingo Polytechnic College were later released after they tested negative.
