Mamombe, Chimbiri, Marova Granted Bail

Three MDC Alliance officials, Joannah Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova have been granted a ZW$1000 bail each.

The trio was also ordered to report to CID Law and Order after every two weeks.

They are accused of planning and or participating in an unsanctioned flash hunger protest that was held on the 13th of May in Warren Park, Harare.

The state says, by so doing, the trio together with other participants who are wanted by police, violated Section 37 of the Criminal Code and Statutory Instrument 99 of 2020 which bars all public gatherings during the fight against COVID 19.

Meanwhile, some have criticised the state saying the charges on the trio are a strategy to conceal the abduction and torture of the three.

The opposition MDC and the international community, as well as human rights defenders, have called upon the government to launch independent and thorough investigations to ensure that the trio gets justice.

Mamombe and the coaccused were arrested on the day of the demonstration and were reportedly abducted from police custody by suspected state security forces who tortured them and sexually assaulted them all night.

They were found dumped 24 hours later in Bindura, about 87km from Harare.
