MDC Factions In Talks That Could End The Leadership Crisis

The two factions within the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) are reportedly having a dialogue in a bid to end the leadership crisis that has dragged on for a sustainable period of time now.

The two factions, one led by Nelson Chamisa and the other led by Thokozani Khupe, are reportedly considering the possibility of unity ahead of the Supreme Court-sanctioned extraordinary congress scheduled for July 31.

Reinstated party leader, Douglas Mwonzora confirmed to the Daily News on Sunday that there were talks going on between the two camps. He said:

Yes, we have had some engagements, but I cannot disclose much. We are determined to have unity in the party and we want everyone to attend the extraordinary congress.

Party insiders also told the publication that the deal that has been put on the table would see Chamisa being elected as the undisputed new party leader, deputised by Khupe and Komichi while Mwonzora would retain the secretary-general’s post.

Khupe and Chamisa have been embroiled in the power wrangle since 2018 when the party founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai died, and Khupe is accusing Chamisa of usurping the throne.
