"Brave, Valiant, Caring Mothers Of Zimbabwe, We Salute You," - ED's Mothers' Day Message

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has described Zimbabwean mothers as valiant, brave and caring amid calls for recognition of women’s enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home.

He made the remarks in his 2020 International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognising the role of women around the world and their contribution to the home, society and country, indeed the world at large. Mnangagwa tweeted:

On this #mothersday2020, let us take a moment to appreciate our blessed mothers who brought is into the world, took care of us, and made us the individuals we are today. Brave, valiant, and caring mothers of Zimbabwe, we salute you and love you.

His message comes when Zimbabwe, in addition to fighting the coronavirus pandemic, is grappling with a deeply entrenched economic and humanitarian crisis that has seen marginalised groups including women enduring the effects.

Studies have observed that women are the hardest hit by the prevailing harsh economic situation that has pushed a large number of them into abject poverty.

The Zimbabwean government has since the attainment of Independence in 1980, however, embarked on a number of programmes premised at empowering women but a lot still needs to be done to ensure gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth.
