4000 Diasporans From All Over The World Escaping Lockdown Induced Hardships Expected To Come Back Home Soon- Report

At least 4 000 Zimbabweans living outside Zimbabwe have indicated they are returning home since different countries are imposing lockdown restrictions to curb spreading the novel coronavirus, The Sunday Mail reports. According to the publication, most of the returnees are escaping lockdown induced hardships and the number could increase in the following weeks.

This was revealed by the Social Welfare Deputy Minister Lovemore Matuke who said:

So far, we have received 1 835 returning citizens during the lockdown period. We are expecting big numbers from South Africa, around 3 000. We are also expecting around 500 from Mozambique, these are people who worked on cruise ships. So there is going to be an influx of people coming in.

Some returnees are expected to come from China. Meanwhile, the government is concerned that the influx of returnees will bump up COVID-19 cases in Zimbabwe. Some returnees are already in quarantine in Plumtree while the government announced that a facility to quarantine returnees in Beitbridge is almost ready.
