“ZANU PF Cannot Be Reformed From Within Or From Outside,” – Jonathan Moyo

Exiled former Zimbabwean Cabinet Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo has said that the ruling party in the country, ZANU PF, cannot be reformed.

Moyo is alleged to have previously suggested that the party can only be destroyed from within but in 2015, he denied ever saying those remarks saying that he had said that ZANU PF can only be reformed from within.

Officiating at the Zimbabwe National Editors’ Forum annual general meeting held in Harare in 2015, Moyo said that it was “absolutely nonsensical for a person like me to say the best way of destroying Zanu-PF is from within,” adding that it was “a drunkard’s statement… a statement that can be said by some village pumpkin that has never come close to a classroom.”

He said only an “uneducated mind translates reform as destruction,” urging attendees to “come and join us.”  Posting on Twitter this Saturday, Moyo said that ZANU PF cannot be reformed. He said:

People #ZanuPF cannot be reformed from within or from outside. #ZanuPF is irreformable! #ZanupfMustGo

This is a clear departure from what he said in 2015 when he claimed that the Zanu-PF 6th National People’s Congress had shown that the party can only be reformed from within.

He said the party had “reformed from multiple centres of power to one centre of power,” a reform that can only be achieved from within.

Moyo fled into exile in 2017 when the then-president, Robert Mugabe, was removed from power.
