"Our First Task Was To Verify The Existence Of 2014 Structures," - Mwonzora

Reinstated Secretary-General of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, Senator Douglas Mwonzora has said that preparations for the party’s extraordinary congress are at an advanced stage.

He made the remarks during an interview with NewsDay’s Blessed Dhara Mhlanga. He said that all structures from the district up to the national level adding that the MDC’s constitution defines a district as a constituency.

Our main task, our first task was to verify the existence of these delegates based on our records and because we were limited in terms of movement because of this pandemic and the lockdown, we had to use a number of methods, WhatsApp groups, email, phone and so on.

We were able to get in touch with quite a number of these delegates and according to the information that I have, our staff has been in touch with over 3000 people. Out of those, they confirm that 3000 have confirmed that they want to come to the congress.

So we are verifying the delegates, we are verifying the voters’ roll which is the list of the delegates. We can tell you now that we have now reached the 50 percent mark but the quorum of Congress is two-thirds of people entitled to attend so we still have almost a thousand people to go and we are confident that we will be able to find these people.

The MDC is divided over the Supreme Court ruling over the party’s power crisis with those supporting Nelson Chamisa opposed to the idea of holding the congress.
