Ministry Of Health Announces Stringent Measures For Repatriation Of Bodies From South Africa

the ministry of Health and Child Care has announced stringent measures for the repatriation of bodies from South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post.

Zimbabwe’s Consul-General to South Africa Mrs Melody Chaurura said that the Embassy had since communicated the new measures to funeral parlours. She said:

Under the new order, all bodies being repatriated to Zimbabwe for burial will be treated as contagious except in cases where the cause of death is a road accident, murder or other body injuries.

… all remains now require the clearance of the Ministry of Health and Child Care prior to their transportation to Zimbabwe under the usual procedures.

Relatives accompanying the remains are now being subjected to under mandatory quarantine at any port of entry upon arrival in the country before proceeding to the various destinations.

She added that although Zimbabwean Health Authorities allowed South African parlours’ drivers to enter into Zimbabwe and proceed to the burial points, it appears that the Ministry had not communicated of the development to authorities at the border.

Recent reports suggested that South African parlours are now overflowing as Zimbabweans are unable to repatriate their relatives due to the coronavirus lockdowns in both countries.
