Victoria Falls Reach Highest Flows In A Decade

The Sunday Mail has reported that Victoria Falls has reached its highest flows in ten years following recent a significant increase in both rainfall and run-off in the catchment area upstream of Victoria Falls during the current rainfall season.

The development sadly happens when Zimbabwe is currently on lockdown to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic meaning that no tourist will be allowed to visit the majestic Victoria Falls.

This was announced by the Zambezi River Authority public relations and communications manager, Elizabeth Karonga who told The Sunday Mail that the first wave of floodwaters a peak flow of 4 289 cubic metres per second was recorded at Victoria Falls on March 31, 2020. She said:

The Zambezi River normally experiences two peaks or floods, which are more evident in the upper catchment area, upstream from Victoria Falls, and depending on their magnitude, their effects are translated downstream.

She added that the second wave of floodwaters reached the Victoria Falls on April 14, and water levels continued to rise.
