Law Enforcement Agents Kill 18 People While Enforcing The Lockdown In Nigeria

Law enforcement agents enforcing the lockdown in Nigeria have killed 18 people while trying to enforce the lockdown, New Zimbabwe reports. The security agents have killed more people than COVID-19 which has 12 fatalities in the West African country so far.

Nigeria imposed lockdowns on Abuja and Lagos to try and curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. A report by the National Human Rights Commission said they had received and documented:

105 complaints of incidents of human rights violations perpetuated by security forces. Of these complaints, there were 8 documented incidents of extrajudicial killings leading to 18 deaths. Whereas Covid-19 led to the death of 11 victims, law enforcement agents extrajudicially executed 18 persons in the cause of the enforcement regulations.

However, the Nigerian National police spokesman Frank Mba said the Human Rights Commission should avail details of the said killings. Mba said this to AFP:

The commission should have given details of those killed by the police, their number, names and places where they were killed to enable us take appropriate actions
