Employers Told To Uphold Fair Labour Practices Despite The Lockdown
The Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima has urged employers to uphold fair labour practices despite the lockdown.
He said the remarks amid reports that some employers were retrenching workers or sending on indefinite unpaid leave or withholding their salaries for the period they are not working due to the national lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
For instance, Air Zimbabwe has sent workers on unpaid indefinite leave as the carrier has grounded flights due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Minister said that there should be dialogue to ensure the protection of employee rights and job security as well as continued business viability.
A draft paper on comprehensive labour market measure for COVID-19 has been drafted and is being subjected to virtual consultations given the limitations to convene face-to-face meetings in line with the guidelines issued by health authorities.

The Ministry of Labour has also proposed workplace guidelines to properly guide employees and employers during the 21-day COVID-19 lockdown.
The Herald reports that the guidelines will be published soon.
Many companies have as a result of the lockdown suspended some of their services resulting in them retaining a skeletal workforce.
