Cabinet Mulls Using University Laboratories For The Purpose Of Testing Coronavirus - Report

After NUST reportedly sent a letter to the government listing the requirements needed to test for coronavirus and announcing their capacity to test the virus, the cabinet reportedly discussed the possibility of using university laboratories to test the virus, The Chronicle reports.

A letter from the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development,
Professor Amon Murwira to the Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Obadiah Moyo in regards to using university facilities to test for the virus reads in part:

In this regard, the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development hereby invites the Ministry of Health and Child Care to carry out a fit for purpose survey of laboratories at the UZ, MSU and Nust or any other institution of higher learning that the Ministry of Health and Child Care may choose, with view of making use of them.

When contacted for comment the health ministry’s Dr Mahomva said:

We are still trying assessing to find out whether we can partner with the universities and this is actually part of what we do when we have massive disasters such as Covid-19 outbreak during which we will be faced with a lot of challenges. We assess a whole lot of other things and we will share with you at the appropriate time
