Shebeens Sprout In Bulawayo Ghettos Due To Bar Closures - Report

After the government issued a directive that saw bars closing across the country, Bulawayo folks were seen congregating in small groups, drinking and playing loud music in Bulawayo’s high-density suburbs, The Chronicle reports.

The publication visited one shebeen in Mzilikazi which is reportedly close to Barbaoufields Police station and witnessed people imbibing. The publication went on to visit other shebeens in many different parts of the town and they witnessed the same scenario, of people drinking in groups.  Shabeen owners are reportedly not taking in “walk-in clients” as they are only serving regulars to avoid detection and or possible arrest.

According to the publication:

Shebeens in Mzilikazi, Makokoba, Iminyela, Entumbane, Magwegwe North and Luveve were fully operational as well as some braai joints, going against Government’s directive. The establishments were selling alcohol and it was brisk business for them.

In some parts in the City of Kings, bars were wide open and pleasure joints were reportedly letting cars in freely as they ignored the president’s ban on gatherings and leisure sports.
