Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care on Sunday 22 March 2020 announced that the first confirmed case of coronavirus was showing signs of recovery whilst the second case was being monitored at Wilkins Hospital.
In a statement issued on Sunday to update the nation on the coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry said:
… the first case is showing signs of recovery and is being managed under self-isolation at home. The second case continues to be managed under isolation at Wilkins Hospital (in Harare) and is stable.
The first case was confirmed last Friday and authorities say that they have scaled up their fight against the pandemic.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that in most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
While the large number of people who contracted the virus is reportedly recovering, the death toll from the global coronavirus pandemic has surpassed 14 000 people and more than 328 000 have tested positive.
