Government And Harare City Council Issue Contradicting Number Of Confirmed Cases Of Coronavirus

The central government of Zimbabwe and Harare City Council which is run by the opposition MDC on Saturday issued contradicting statements on the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the country.

Nelson Chamisa the leader of the MDC claimed on Twitter that he had been informed by doctors at the Wilkins Hospital, a Harare City Council health facility that Zimbabwe designated for infectious diseases, that there were two new cases recorded at the institution.

This would bring the total number of confirmed cases to three since another case of a patient resident in Victoria Falls had already been confirmed.

The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Obadiah Moyo announced that the country had confirmed a total of two cases which is contrary to what Chamisa had reported.

The contradiction means that the institution is now used as a political battlefield with each party claiming to be privy to the latest and accurate information.

It is also suggestive of opaqueness on the coronavirus and lack of transparency by the President Emmerson Mnangagwa-led administration and or abuse of social media by Chamisa to gain political mileage by creating panic and enmity between the government and members of the public.

The central government however urges members of the public to rely on official information for updates on the virus.
