COVID-19: Ministry Of Health Official Update - 22 March 2020

Here is the Ministry’s official update on the COVID-19:

Ministry of Health and Child Care CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATE: 22 MARCH 2020

The Ministry would like to advise the nation that to date, Zimbabwe han recorded two confirmed cases of COVID-19.

As was previously reported. the first case is showing signs of recovery and is being managed under self-isolation at home. The second case continues to be managed under isolation at Wilkins Hospital and is stable. Seven contacts of the second case have so far been identified and followed up, and the remaining 11 are still being followed-up. Samples have been collected from the 7 contacts identified so far and 4 results receised so far have tested Negative for COVID-19. The Ministry will continue with intensified surveillance to detect any potential cases early and limit further spread of COVID-19. As of the 20th of March 2020, 266 073 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 11 184 d.ths have been reported from more than 160 countries globally. To date, more than 1000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 30 deaths have been reported from more than 37 countries and regions in Africa. This includes cases from ten SADC countries — South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, Tanzania, Namibia, Seychelles, Angola, Democratic Ite,ublic of Congo, Montmbique and Zimbabwe.

The Ministry continues to be on HIGH alert to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the COVID-I9 outbreak in Zimbabwe. the National Rapid Response Team (RRT) convened a meeting on the 21′ of March to come up with enhanc. response strategies to the two COM-19 cases identified. Local RRTs in Victoria Falls and Harare City have scaled up the response. by intensifying surveillance and strengthening contact tracing in the two regions. Other sub-national RRTs havee cascaded training of health care workers on COVID-I9 case management to lower levels.

The Ministry would like to remind everyone be vigilant in the prevention of COV1D-19 and practice good personal hygiene inclutling:

  • Washing hands with soap and water frequently or use of an alcohol-based hand-rub,
  • Covering your nose and mouth with tissue paper or flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick, coughing or sneezing.

Additionally, all non-essential travel is strongly discouraged.
