Coronavirus Cases In South Africa Shoot To 38

South Africa has since Friday recorded 14 coronavirus cases bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 38.

The rise was announced by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize who had warned on Friday that there would be more infections as the department along with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases awaited laboratory confirmation.

Speaking after the new infections had been confirmed, Mkhize said:

This means that our numbers have increased by 14 from Friday’s confirmed cases of 24.

The development suggests that most infections are in Gauteng province which has 17 confirmed cased followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 11, Western Cape with nine and Mpumalanga, with one.

Meanwhile, 114 South Africans arrived in South Africa from Wuhan, China on Saturday and they are quarantined in The Ranch Resort in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The virus is rapidly spreading globally and also on the African continent. This is worrisome considering that most countries in developing countries do not have strong health systems which can prevent and or contain the pandemic.

The number of African countries that have reported cases of the virus on Saturday rose to 20 after Rwanda, Namibia and eSwatini confirmed their first cases.
