Morton Jaffray Workers Are Being Exposed To Dangerous Chemicals Everyday, As Harare Fails To Buy Protective Clothing For Them - Report

Budgetary constraints have forced City Of Harare workers who are working at the city’s water plant Morton Jaffray to work without protective clothing which is dangerous as they are exposed to dangerous chemicals, The Standard reports.

The situation came to light while senators were touring the plant last week. According to the waterworks’ superintendent, Edias Nyanguwo:

We ordered safety equipment and clothing last year. We need respirator cartridges for the workers, but we have a challenge due to budgetary issues.

There are chemicals we store here like activated carbon, that black one, it removes the smell from the water.

The government is yet to approve the city’s 2020 budget which has caused budgetary constraints for the city fathers. Aluminium sulphate and black charcoal reportedly cause different health problems like constipation, irritated eyes and skin problems if people who work with or around them are not properly protected.
