ZBC Bemoans Loss Of Govt Financial Support

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) chairperson Josaya Tai has urged the government to restore grants that used to be extended to the parastatal.

Tai said this while giving oral evidence before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services chaired by Binga North MP, Prince Sibanda (MDC-Alliance) on Friday. He said:

ZBC has to operate as a commercially viable entity. Although ZBC remained a public broadcaster, the commercialisation effect lost its grant component from the funding scheme.

A snap survey in the region and beyond showed that public broadcasters receive handsome Government grants and collect licensing fees in their funding model.

Tai argued that the slot occupied and utilised by the Government diaries on the various available ZBC platforms and channels constitutes 80 per cent of the corporation’s operational costs.

He added that the meaning of ZBC’s national mandate has been misunderstood as this does not mean that Government departments and ministries can use the corporation’s services for free.
