A grocery store was robbed by six machete-wielding robbers who left two people with severe stab wounds on Sunday night.
The robbers, who were armed with machetes, knives and a gun, raided a homestead in the Emvalweni area in Mangwe District, Matabeleland South.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident. He said:
On February 23, 2020, at about midnight, six unknown male adults armed with an unidentified firearm, machetes and knives pounced on a homestead at Emvalweni area, Mangwe. They fired gunshots, forced open the victim’s house and tuckshop and stole various groceries and cash.
The two victims were stabbed with a knife and were left with hands and legs tied. The suspects are at large and investigations are in progress.
There has been a lull in cases of robberies involving machete-wielding gangs over the past few weeks after law enforcement agents launched a countrywide blitz against the so-called MaShurugwi gangs.
A resurgence in violent crime is a cause for concern.
