Govt Working On Highlanders, Orlando Pirates Uhuru Cup Match

The government is working on arranging a special football match for the 40th Independence Day celebrations to be held at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo on 18 April.

Bulawayo-based Highlanders Football Club will play South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the Uhuru Cup final if government authorities get their wish.

Ministry of Sports Chief Director, Benson Dube confirmed the development to NewZimbabwe.com. He said:

We are working on arranging a match between Highlanders and Orlando Pirates for Zimbabwe-at-40 celebrations.

We are very much prepared to promote sports in the city and in the country. This match will also bring tourists who will bring foreign currency into the country.

Highlanders and Orlando Pirates both use the traditional black and white colours and the majority of football followers in Bulawayo support the two teams which play in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League and the Absa Premiership respectively.

The Buccaneers last visited Barbourfields Stadium last year when they played Zimbabwean champions FC Platinum in the CAF Champions league. A total of 23 164 fans attended the match.
