‘Govt Employs Teachers From Every District’, Mathema Refutes Discrimination Claims

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema has said the government recruits teachers at the district level to ensure that they speak the local language of the area they will be deployed to.

Mathema was responding to Nkayi South National Assembly member Stars Mathe, who had alleged that locals were being overlooked in the recruitment processes. In response, Mathema said:

Our laws and rules are very clear on the appointment of teachers, that indeed every region of Zimbabwe has to have teachers from their areas.

We are employing teachers from every district right across the country. When we hire teachers, we take into consideration teachers that are native speakers of all the different languages that we have.

We consider where the person comes from and the language that they speak. We do so especially when we hire teachers for Early Childhood Development pupils.

Following an uproar in March 2019, the Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education Mrs Tumisang Thabela had to apologise to the people of Bulawayo over the deployment of teachers that are not proficient in the region’s local languages.
