Beitbridge Modernisation Contractor Confident Of Beating Deadline

The main civil works in the modernisation of Beitbridge Border Post are set to commence next month after the contractors indicated that they have done Phase 1 (pre-commencement works) of the project.

The project is being carried out by ZimBorders for $241 million and is expected to have been completed within three years.

Speaking after touring the project on Wednesday, Secretary for Local Government and Public Works Zvinechimwe Churu said:

We have done some pre-commencement and minor works and the main civil works will start next month.

The initial stage was to minimise the challenges of accommodating vehicle traffic during peak periods.

Basically, we are separating traffics into buses, commercial, light vehicles and small commercial vehicles (“Omalayitsha”).

Soon, we are moving from a transition stage to the upgrading of the current immigration terminal and other key infrastructure.

The project’s contracts manager, Herkie Sandernbergh of Raubex Construction said some buildings will be demolished while others were set for upgrading to fit into the modernisation.

He assured Churu that they will be able to meet the deadline to finish the project.
