Police Ban Chamisa's SONA As It Coincided With Schools' Opening

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has banned opposition MDC leader Nelson Chamisa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) that was set for this Wednesday in Mbare.

In prohibiting the event, police said that it (the event) would disrupt the opening of schools for 2020.

MDC deputy national spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka told members of the media fraternity during a briefing at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House on Tuesday that the event has been postponed to next week. He said:

The police have today proscribed Agenda 2020, a key event for the party that was scheduled for tomorrow in Mbare, Harare, citing flimsy excuses that the event cannot proceed because the police are busy with the schools that are opening this week as if the police have anything to do with the opening of schools.

… For fear of our (supporters) lives against this brutal dictatorship, and given what this regime has done before, we have decided to postpone the Agenda 2020 event to next week on Tuesday at a venue to be announced.

The MDC had planned to hold the event at Mbuya Musodzi Hall in Mbare and Chamisa was expected to give an outline of his party’s plan for 2020.

Police have now developed a penchant for banning MDC programmes willy-nilly as this is not the first such kind of event to be banned.
