Zimbabwe Submits 6 New Project Proposals For China's Consideration

Zimbabwe has through a ministerial team chaired by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo, submitted six projects for consideration by the Chinese government.

The development follows a visit to Zimbabwe by Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Mr Wang Yi.

Acting President of Zimbabwe, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga told Mr Yi that the sooner the projects get the nod the better. Speaking at a dinner hosted in honour Mr Wang Yi, Chiwenga said:

As you are aware, Your Excellency, we have set ourselves a target to attain the status of an upper-middle-income economy by 2030. It is our hope that these projects if started early, will provide the impetus that we need towards that objective.

Sino-Zimbabwe relations can be traced back to the Zimbabwe’s pre-independence period when China trained Zimbabwean liberation fighters and also provided weapons and food.

China is currently funding a number of projects and programmes in Zimbabwe including the Parliament of Zimbabwe which is almost complete in Mt Hampden West of Harare.

Meanwhile, there are analysts who believe that the relationship is not a win-win situation accusing the Asian giant of siphoning Zimbabwe’s natural resources in exchange for cheap and unsustainable commodities and infrastructure.
