Government Deploys "2 700 Teachers" To "Most Critical Areas"

The government of Zimbabwe has announced the deployment of 2 700 teachers to various regions across the country ahead of school reopening on Tuesday.

The development was announced by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs Tumisang Thabela who said:

We have so far recruited 2 700 teachers from the 5 000 that were approved by Treasury. They have been deployed to several schools across the country. Most of them have been deployed to most critical areas that include infant, Early Childhood Development, Grades One and Two and our specialist subjects which are sciences and vocational subjects. We are continuing to develop the indigenous languages so that’s another area that has attracted the emerging recruitment.

This comes amid calls by teachers’ unions for workers to stay away from work in protest of “paltry” salaries they are being paid.

Government workers, teachers and doctors included, spent the good part of 2019 protesting, engaging government and grappling over poor working conditions and unsustainable salaries which they are being eroded by the soaring inflation.
