Senior Doctor Returns To Work, Urges Colleagues To Abandon Strike

A senior doctor at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, David Chimuka, who is a cardiothoracic surgeon, said he is back at work and has urged his colleagues to do the same while looking for avenues for dialogue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In a recorded Whatsapp message to his fellow consultants on Thursday, which he later confirmed to The Herald, Dr Chimuka said:

At the last meeting we had with the Minister we said we need to go above the emergency but not at 100 per cent, but we need to start opening our wards and we do whatever we can but in the meantime, we make all efforts and open up all avenues to go and see the President so that we tell him what we feel. He must hear our own words.

Senior doctors declared incapacitation on September 14 following a similar move by their juniors.

The development resulted in the near-collapse of the country’s public health delivery system as hospitals were left with no doctors to attend to patients.
