Douglas Mwonzora Tells Govt Not To Fund Terror Groups

The former Secretary-General for the opposition MDC led by Nelson Chamisa has told the government that the law has to be specific and forbid sponsoring of terror groups even by the state.

He made these remarks during a Senate debate on the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Bill during which he expressed that he felt that the Bill was targeting a shadowy Zanu PF political outfit called Generation 40. He said:

I do agree that there must be curbing to the funding of terrorism, but terrorism must be defined because what happens to the funding of the militia by politicians? This is not covered in this law.

In other words and like what happened in 2008 where organised gangs were sent on payment to terrorise people: That kind of terrorism is not covered by this law.

During the 2008 run-off election, suspected ZANU PF members unleashed terror on MDC supporters leaving many dead, injured and homeless as a way to force them to vote for Robert Mugabe.

His remarks come amidst reports that the disappearances and torture of some members of MDC and human rights activists in the country were sanctioned by the state.
