Prominent War Veteran Calls For Gukurahundi Apology & Compensation Of Victims

A prominent war veteran, Tshinga Dube, has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government to apologise for the Gukurahundi massacres and compensate the relatives of the victims.

Dube made the call while speaking on the sidelines of the launch of his book, “Quiet Flows the Zambezi” in Harare on Wednesday. He said:

The government can choose people to perform these rituals of apology. In Africa, when someone kills your son, daughter or mother, there is always that practice of ‘kuripa’ (compensation).

That has not been done for the 20 000 people who died. Nobody has done anything about it. Unfortunately, even for those who have been assigned for national reconciliation, we have not seen much of what they are doing.

Gukurahundi refers to the massacre of thousands of innocent civilians in the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces in the 1980s by the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).

The massacres were carried out on the pretext of crushing a handful of former liberation fighters who were disgruntled with how post-independent Zimbabwe was being run.
