Home Affairs Minister Warns Sponsors Of Machete-Wielding Gangs

Home Affairs Minister, Kazembe Kazembe has warned individuals who are sponsoring the machete-wielding gangs of imminent arrest saying that the law will be impartially applied.

These remarks come when the Zimbabwe Republic Police have arrested over 5000 over the past eight months over illegal mining and possession of dangerous weapons.

There are reports suggesting that the machete-wielding gangs, some of them nicknamed Mashurugwi and or Al Shabab are being sponsored by prominent politicians to unleash the reign of terror in the mining sector to allow looting.

Kazembe said that raids will continue so as to establish a conducive environment for investment which is consistent with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Zimbabwe is Open for Business mantra. He said:

The law will not be applied selectively in dealing with illegal activities regardless of one’s social standing including politicians.

His remarks resonated with those of police national spokesperson, assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi who hinted that police will continue with the operation which is aimed at arresting all illegal artisanal miners and anyone found in possession of dangerous weapons.

These machete-wielding gangs are said to be moving around the country, killing other miners, raping women and slaughtering people’s livestock.
