Zimbabwe’s power utility, ZESA has disconnected Mnene Hospital, a mission and only referral medical institution in Mberengwa in the Midlands province.
Mnene was disconnected over over a bill of about $700 000. An official who spoke to the Herald on condition of anonymity said that they have engaged Mberengwa North legislator, Tafanana Zhou over the matter. The official said:
We are the district’s referral hospital and the situation is bad. We can’t attend to emergencies with no power. The situation at the mortuary is also very bad.
We are a critical institution and for them to switch off power is a sign they don’t care about human life.
Zhou has however said that his hands are tied on the matter since Mnene is not a government institution adding that the ZESA bill has to be paid by authorities running it.
Meanwhile, Zesa southern region representative Engineer King Dube said that they only switched off other sections like the hospital staff cottages and spared critical sections of the hospital like wards and mortuary.
