Harare Refuses To Talk To Striking Nurses

The Zimbabwe Urban and Rural Council Nurses Workers’ Union (ZURCNWU) has resolved to engage the Ministry of Local government in its bid to have nurses’ grievances addressed following a snub by Harare City Council Town Clerk, Hosiah Chisango.

ZURCNWU president Simbarashe Tafirenyika told NewZimbawe.com that the City Fathers rebuffed his organisation on the pretext that it was not properly registered. He said:

We tried to engage the Town Clerk, he refused to talk to us and he referred us to the national employment council of Harare

He is actually aware that we are not a member of this body because our union is new so we have hit a brick wall.

Nurses at Harare City Council Clinics embarked on a job action two weeks ago citing low salaries due to inflation which has made it impossible for them to go to work (a situation generally referred to as incapacitation).

Meanwhile, the newly-formed ZURCNWU has not yet joined the National Employment Council (NEC) which is the bipartite labour body which represents council workers’ unions.
