A traditional midwife has assisted an estimated 100 pregnant women to deliver in just eight days at her Tagarira Flats home in Mbare.
Esther Zinyoro, or Mbuya Gwena as she is popularly known, is a member of St John’s Apostolic Church of the Whole World.
She has been inundated by clients after municipal nurses went on strike last week demanding more pay. Speaking to The Herald on Thursday, Mbuya Gwena said:
I have never assisted such huge numbers of women to deliver in my life. Yes, I sometimes assist women from my church should there be any need for assistance, but not as many as these ones.
Mbuya Gwena lives in a two-roomed apartment where women take turns to deliver on two tents spread on the floor in the lounge.
Her instruments are only a razor blade and wool, and once a woman is delivered, she is transferred into her tiny bedroom together with the newborn baby and has to be picked by relatives before end of the day.
