Malema Dresses Down Opponent During Debate Over Mugabe Condolence Motion

Julius Malema, leader of South Africa’s second-largest opposition party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), on Tuesday, hit out at Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Ghaleb Cachalia, calling him an ageist who hanged on the coattails of his family’s achievements.

Malema had sponsored a condolence motion for the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, and during the debate, Cachalia had said Malema was only six years old when he [Cachalia] attended the commemoration of the anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights in Harare. In his remarks, Malema said:

I heard someone saying here that in 1988, Malema was this or that age. That’s a problem of ageists. You’re an ageist of note because whether I was eight years at the time, politically if I were to compare what I’ve achieved and what you’ve achieved, you don’t come anywhere close.

Malema accused Cachalia of hiding behind his mother’s credentials and using his family’s name for personal accumulation.

In the end, all parties in the South African Parliament adopted the Mugabe condolence motion with the objection of the DA, while the IFP and the ACDP abstained.
