1 In 4 women Justify Wife-Beating In African Societies - Research
Research by Afrobarometer is showing that 1 in 4 women and even more men in 34 African countries justify wife-beating Sunday Mail reports.
The survey that was done between 2016 and 2018 shows that 12% of 2400 said that sometimes wife beatings were justified and 22% of the males interviewed said the wife beatings were justified In Zimbabwe only.
The research’s findings were echoed by Gender Links Manager for Zimbabwe, Ms Priscilla Maposa who said:
They are of the view that a wife must be beaten at regular intervals even if she has not done anything wrong. At first we thought that it was a joke but it is happening. These men were socialised to be aggressive and if they had a chance to grow up exposed to love and an environment that do not tolerate wife beating, we were going to have a different story.
The research was published on the onset of the annual 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
