Apex Council organising secretary Charles Chinosengwa said that all civil servants will stage a demonstration on Wednesday next week in protest over the government’s failure to increase their salaries.
Speaking to NewsDay on Thursday, Chinosengwa reiterated civil servants’ demand to have the lowest-paid public worker paid US$475 equivalent at the prevailing interbank market bank rate. He said:
Yesterday, we then wrote to his counterpart the Minister of Labour Nzenza telling her that it is now two weeks after they said they will commit to our salary adjustments.
As a result, Apex Council has resolved to engage in a demonstration next Wednesday in Harare, which will include all civil servants, and right now, we are in the process of notifying the police.
However, Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube has already said the government cannot afford to peg civil servants’ salaries at the prevailing US-RTGS interbank rates.
Ncube was speaking to reporters during the anti-sanctions rally at the National Sports Stadium on Friday where he said the government will go “bust” if it attempted to do so.,
How can all the ‘educated’ civil servants be so hoowinked to negotiate salaries every month. They should emulate the doctors stance. This is NOT about increment, but its about restoring stolen salaries. Remember salaries were in US$ before this worthless curreny came in claiming that it was EQUAL to the US$, then came the reality that it was NO LONGER EQUAL. From there the money should have been adjusted to the previous US$ before the ramshackle currency was introduced. So the GVT should backdate people’s money from the date they announced the new currency because they stole people’s salaries. Now the civil servants do not seem to see this. They like loads of useless currency and ‘increments’. this is RIDICULOUS. TIME TO SAY NO AND DEMAND REAL MONEY!!! PERIOD!!!
