Civil Servants To Stage Demonstration On Wednesday

Apex Council organising secretary Charles Chinosengwa said that all civil servants will stage a demonstration on Wednesday next week in protest over the government’s failure to increase their salaries.

Speaking to NewsDay on Thursday, Chinosengwa reiterated civil servants’ demand to have the lowest-paid public worker paid US$475 equivalent at the prevailing interbank market bank rate. He said:

Yesterday, we then wrote to his counterpart the Minister of Labour Nzenza telling her that it is now two weeks after they said they will commit to our salary adjustments.

As a result, Apex Council has resolved to engage in a demonstration next Wednesday in Harare, which will include all civil servants, and right now, we are in the process of notifying the police.

However, Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube has already said the government cannot afford to peg civil servants’ salaries at the prevailing US-RTGS interbank rates.
