Police Stop Vendors' Protest In Harare

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Monday dispersed vendors who had gathered in central Harare to stage a peaceful demonstration against police brutality.

Vendors Initiative for Socio-Economic Transformation (Viset) executive director Samuel Wadzai said the law enforcement agents were swiftly deployed along Jason Moyo Avenue and Rezende Street where the vendors had gathered to start the demo. Said Wadzai:

We had planned to hold our peaceful march against police brutality and the death of Hilton Tamangani despite the fact that the police had banned the demonstration. This is because we felt that the ban had no sound basis.

The vendors were told to disperse as police had earlier refused to approve the demo without giving reasons.

The protest was organised by Viset members who wanted to express their displeasure following the death of another vendor Hilton Tafadzwa Tamangani who died after alleged severe torture by law enforcement agents.
