Botswana Elections: Mokgweetsi Masisi Retains Presidency

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) candidate Mokgweetsi Masisi has officially been declared the winner and president of Botswana in the elections held recently.

The results were announced on Friday morning by the country’s chief justice, who is also the convener of elections according to the Constitution. Said the Chief Justice:

I, Chief Justice Terence Rannowane, declare Mokgweetsi Masisi as the winner of the election and president of Botswana.

The BDP won 29 constituencies out of 57 required to form the government.

The opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change has secured 12 constituencies while the Botswana Patriotic Front – backed by former president Ian Khama – has three seats. The Alliance of Progressives has won 1 seat.

Results from 12 constituencies have not yet been announced as counting is still ongoing.
