25 October 2019 Declared Public Holiday

The government has declared Friday, October 25, 2019, a public holiday to enable members of the public to participate in the march against economic restrictions imposed by Western countries against Zimbabwe.

Addressing reporters during a post-cabinet media briefing in Harare on Monday, Higher and Tertiary Education Minister, Amon Murwira said:

To further amplify this day to the economic emancipation and wellbeing of Zimbabweans, Friday, October 25, 2019, has been declared an official public holiday.

Marchers are expected to assemble at Robert Mugabe Square behind the Rainbow Towers Hotel by 6.00 am in the morning from where they will proceed to the National Sports Stadium.

Highlights of the events scheduled will include entertainment, solidarity messages from various stakeholders, messages on the background and effects of sanctions, a soccer match between Dynamos and Highlanders and the anti-sanctions gala from 6 pm till the next morning.

October 25 was set aside by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as the day for the region to stand in solidarity with Zimbabwe in calling for the removal of sanctions.

Western powers imposed the targeted sanctions nearly 20 years ago to put pressure on the Zimbabwean government to respect human and property rights.
