KaTsaona Comes Back To Town

KaTsaona( a Shona name for a small food ration, usually packaged in a small package, used as a stop-gap measure) these past few days slowly made way into some homes across Harare and Zimbabwe Sunday Mail reports.

Katsaona is when foodstuffl such as sugar, mealie meal, rice cooking oil are repackaged into small packs and sold to patrons who want to consume them once. The main reason behind Katsaona is because patron can’t afford a whole 2kg or 1kg or they don’t really need it.

As the economic meltdown intensifies many have resorted to buying Katsaona to eat and live for that day. The Sunday Mail spoke to people selling these rationed foodstuffs and they said:

Upfu (mealie meal) is now expensive. Very few people are still buying a 10kg pack of mealie meal, which now costs as much as $70. If one needs mealie meal, they have to buy it with matemba. This is the same when one needs a cup of rice, they have to buy it with sugar or cooking oil

Vendors in Mbare agreed that katsaona was now big business in town.
