Zimbabwe Plants First Hemp (Mbanje) Crop

Zimbabwe planted its first industrial hemp at Harare Central Remand Prison on 11 October at an occasion attended by the Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri.

Speaking at the planting ceremony, Shiri said:

This project is the first of its kind in the history of our country.

This pilot project will provide essential knowledge or information for the successful production of this crop. The benefits that will be derived from the production of industrial hemp are enormous and varied.

The hemp (Mbanje in Shona) project is by a company called Zimbabwe Industrial Hemp Trust (ZIHT).  The country legalised the farming of hemp in 2018.
