MDC MPs Write To Speaker Of Parliament Over Remarks On Allowances

Members of the opposition MDC have through their lawyer, Alec Muchadehama, asked the speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda to withdraw his threats to hold back the sitting allowances of the legislators.

Mudenda had made a ruling to withhold sitting allowances for MDC MPs who walked out of Parliament when President Emmerson Mnangagwa started delivering his State of the Nation Address (SONA) speech.

On behalf of the legislators, Muchadehama said that Mudenda had in his actions acted as the complainant, judge, juror and executioner.

He also said that Mudenda’s conduct was unlawful, unreasonable, disproportionate and unfair as it violated international and Parliamentary norms and regulations. Muchadehama said:

If we do not hear from you as requested or as expected, we shall take it that you are sticking to your decision and in that event, our instructions are to approach the courts of law to protect our clients. Should this course unfold, we have been instructed to institute legal proceedings against you in your individual capacity.
