Zimbabwe Doctors Urge World Health Organisation & UN To Intervene

Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, the union for junior and middle-level doctors in the public sector, on Monday, said that the Wolrd Health Organisation and the United Nations must help in raising funding for the country’s health sector.

Their remarks come after they pulled out of the Health Apex Council which they said no longer represented their interests.

The doctors also rejected the government offer of 60% allowance increment saying that it was too insignificant considering the country’s inflationary economy.

The increment could have left doctors earning around 1700 Zimbabwe dollars, approximately US$111, well below their demand of a 400 per cent salary hike.

Doctors have been on industrial action for 35 days now and government-owned medical institutions had to engage military personnel to stand in their place to save the situation.

They say that they are not sure as to when they will return to work as the erosion of their salaries has incapacitated them to execute their duties and responsibilities.

This is despite Health Minister, Dr Obadiah Moyo ordering them on Saturday that they should return to work on Monday without fail.
