Former MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora has denied allegations that he is now fronting a ZANU PF agenda in calling for the removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Mwonzora, as MDC deputy secretary of international relations, travelled to Sweden with Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda, and other MPs.
The team met officials from Sweden’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, and officials from the ruling Social Democratic Party. Speaking to NewsDay about the allegations, Mwonzora denied any wrongdoing. He said:
I have not committed any offence at all. I have followed all the procedures to the book and I have submitted my report to the party.
The European Union lifted sanctions against Zimbabwe a long time ago and as far as February 19 they indicated that they were not going to re-impose the sanctions.
As far as I know, only the late (former President) Robert Mugabe and his wife and the Zimbabwe Defence Industries are still on EU active sanctions, the former army personnel Constantino Chiwenga and Perrance Shiri, including army general Phillip Valerio Sibanda are on the inactive list.
MDC deputy spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka refuted claims that the party was facing internal turmoil. He said:
We are very united at the cockpit level, very, very united. We are a cohesive unit. President Chamisa is out of the country on a diplomatic offensive. That is just smoke without fire, teargas is smoke, but there is no fire.
