Dean Smith, Aston Villa coach, has said that he picked Marvelous Nakamba ahead of Douglas Luiz for the Arsenal clash because of Nakamba’s dazzling performance against West Ham.
The West Ham match was Nakamba’s EPL debut and his second match for Aston Villa since his arrival at Villa Park from Belgium side, Club Brugge.
Speaking after losing 3-2 to Arsenal at Emirates, Smith said that his choices were also affected by the return of some of his lieutenants from injury. In his post-match interview on Twitter, he said:
I had a decision to make. Trezeguet came back and I’ve got Conor (Hourihane), Henri (Lansbury) and Douglas.
I was pleased with Marvelous’ (Nakamba) performance against West Ham United and I just felt I didn’t need three midfielders on the bench, I needed Keinan Davis and Jota on there as well.
Nakamba established a solid wall in front of the defenders in both matches only to lose momentum in the dying minutes of the matches.
He said that despite his good start, he believes that there is still room for improvement.
He has so far been competing for the first XI spot with the 21-year-old Brazil Under-23 captain, Douglas Luiz who featured in the club’s first EPL games and scored one goal.
Lately, Dean has shown that he preferred Nakamba’s services compared to those of former Manchester City and Brazilian international who was not even on the bench during the Arsenal match.
