Government Set To Unveil Up To 1700 Buses To Ease Transport Challenges - Report

The government is set to import 1700 buses to ease transport challenges the Herald reports. The matter came to light in New York where the president was addressing Zanu PF supporters in America. The President is in New York attending the 74th edition of The United Nations General Assembly.

The President said the economic situation has resulted in the private sector becoming cruel they had to subsidise the transport sector by bringing cheap Zupco buses. He further revealed his plan to unveil upto 1700 buses to ease transport challenges in Zimbabwe. Said Mnangagwa

As a result of our economic situation, the private sector had become so cruel that they were taxing our working community when they come to work and we decided as Government to intervene and bring in buses,” he said.

“We intend to buy up to 1 700 buses. We have contracts for 500 buses from Belarus, 1 000 from China and 200 from South Africa. Instead of paying $4 or so you pay 50 cents. We will continue to release them. Some have already arrived

Where a combi charges close to $5 per trip Zupco demands only 10% of that for all routes to most residential suburbs except for Norton and Chitungwiza in Harare. Zupco has now introduced long distances that link towns.
