"The Money Has Now Reflected In My Account," Gems Receive Allowances
Zimbabwe netball team, the Gems, have started receiving $20 000 in allowances each which the government promised them for participating at the Vitality Netball World Cup finals held in Liverpool, England, in July.
A fortnight ago, Sport, Youth, Arts and Recreation Minister, Kirsty Coventry, promised them that their “thank you” token of appreciation was finally coming.
One unnamed gem spoke to the Chronicle and expressed gratitude to the former World Swimming record holder for her intervention to effect the release of the long-awaited allowances. She said:
I am excited. The money has now reflected in my account and even though it came a bit late, it’s better late than never. We would like to applaud the Honourable Minister for keeping her word. If only other administrators could emulate her.
Another gem who spoke to the same publication said that some were now losing hope. She also thanked the media for continually raising the plight of the players.
