"Poor Governance, & Not Legitimacy, Is At The Heart Of Our Crisis" - Former WTO Employee

Resigning top adviser to President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that the country’s problems were emanating from poor governance practices by government officials.

Petina Gappah, a lawyer and a writer dismissed claims by some analysts that the socio-economic and political crises in Zimbabwe were as a result of the legitimacy issue.

Posting on Facebook, Gappah said:

The crisis in Zimbabwe is one of governance. It is not about legitimacy. The MDC failed to prove its win in the Constitutional Court. And by not publishing the V11s to back their claim that (Nelson) Chamisa won 2,6 million votes, they cannot even win in the court of public opinion. This does not get government off the hook. Because governance, poor governance, and not legitimacy, is at the heart of our crisis.

Zanu PF needs to start thinking of itself not as a ruling party, but the governing party or party of government, with governance rooted in its obligations to the people of Zimbabwe as set out in the Constitution to which we all agreed.

Gappah who previously worked at the World Trade Organisation for 17 years criticised some of Mnangagwa’s aides saying that they lacked competence that is necessary to transform the country into a better economy.

Her remarks come as the opposition MDC is saying that Zimbabwe’s problems emanated from the 2018 disputed elections which they accuse the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of manipulating the results in favour of Mnangagwa.

Zimbabwe is submerged in a number of problems including electricity deficit, fuel shortages, inflation, and a huge deficit in medicines.
